Holy marriage - Seikon

Japanese: 聖婚 - せいこん

The word means "sacred marriage," and refers to the marriage of a god and a goddess, or between a god and a human. It is a translation of the Greek word hieros gamos and the English word hierogamy derived from it, and is also called "divine marriage." It is told in many myths and legends, and is often accompanied by a ritual. The marriage of Zeus, the chief god in Greek mythology, and his wife Hera was considered particularly important in ancient Greece, and was repeatedly commemorated as a ritual in various places, serving to emphasize the sanctity and significance of marriage.

〈聖なる結婚〉の意で，男神と女神の結婚，あるいは神と人間との結婚のこと。ギリシア語のヒエロス･ガモスhieros gamos，それに由来する英語ヒエロガミーhierogamyなどの訳語であり，〈神婚〉ともいう。神話や伝説に多数語られており，儀礼を伴っていることも少なくない。ギリシア神話の主神ゼウスとその正妻ヘラとの結婚は，古代ギリシアでは特別に重要視され，各地で祭式として繰り返し記念され，結婚の神聖と意義を強調する機能を果たした。
