Red light district (brothel) - yuukaku

Japanese: 遊郭(遊廓) - ゆうかく

A place where licensed prostitutes are forced to live collectively within a certain area through a congregation system. When political powers approve licensed prostitution, they often adopt a congregation system as a measure to protect public order and improve morals. In addition to making it easier to control private prostitutes and collect taxes, there is also a policy intention to make the area a place with a different character from general civil society. There is a reason to set up a brothel there, and it is essentially different from simply having a group of men in the same trade gather together. Therefore, in order to make this policy effective, brothels were set up on the outskirts of cities, surrounded by ditches and walls, with only one entrance and exit to cut them off from the outside world.

公娼（こうしよう）を集娼方式によって一定区域内に集団的に居住させておく場所。政治権力が公娼を容認するときに，治安や風俗の対策のために集娼制をとることが多いのは，私娼の取締りや税金の徴収を便利にすることのほかに，政策的に，そこを一般市民社会とは異なる性格をもつ場所とするという意図があった。そこに遊郭を設置する意義があるわけで，単に同業者が集住しているのとは本質的に異なる。したがってその政策を効果的にするため，遊郭は都市の周辺部に設定し，周囲を溝や塀で囲み，出入口を1ヵ所にして外部との遮断を図った。
