New Georgia Island

Japanese: ニュージョージア[島]（英語表記）New Georgia Island

It is the largest island in the New Georgia group, west of the Solomon Islands in the southwest Pacific Ocean. It is about 80km long and 48km wide at its widest point. It has a population of about 6,300. The inhabitants are of Melanesian descent and speak non-Austronesian (Papuan) languages. Most of the inhabitants are concentrated around the Roviana Lagoon in the southwest. Marovo Lagoon in the southeast is the world's largest lagoon. Bill Harbour on the south coast of the southeast is a timber collection center. Coconut cultivation is thriving. [Akimichi Tomoya]
