Omodeo, A. - Omodeo

...History of Italy: 1871-1915 (1928) and History of 19th Century Europe (1932) are representative works written from this perspective. A historian who took a position close to Croce's method and historical interpretation was Adolfo Omodeo (1889-1946), whose works include The Age of the Risorgimento (1931), The Political Actions of the Count of Cavour (1940), and The Defense of the Risorgimento (1952). Research prior to these two considered the Risorgimento to be a revival movement unique to Italy, and focused on the War of Independence, diplomatic history, and the history of the Savoy dynasty, and interpreted secret societies and revolutionary events exclusively from a patriotic perspective, but Croce and Omodeo liberated the Risorgimento from the perspective of national history, and opened up a new perspective that broadly positioned it as part of the liberal movement in 19th century Europe.
