A military commander in the early Kamakura period. His name is also written as Asamasa. His father was Musashinokami Yoshinobu. His mother was the third daughter of Hiki no Ama, the wet nurse of Minamoto no Yoritomo. He was Yoritomo's adopted son. He was the son-in-law of Hojo Tokimasa's second wife, Maki no Kata. He served as Musashinokami and Uemon no Gonnosuke. In September 1203 (Kennin 3), he participated in the pursuit of Hiki Yoshikazu, and in October, he was appointed as the Kyoto Shugo and went to Kyoto. The following year, when the remnants of the Taira clan in Iga and Ise started a rebellion, he put down the rebellion, and in May, as a reward for his achievements, he was appointed as the Shugo of both provinces. In November of that year, he had an argument with Hatakeyama Shigeyasu, who was in Kyoto, and slandered Shigeyasu to his mother-in-law, Makikata. As a result, in June 1205 (Genkyu 2), the Hatakeyama clan was wiped out by order of Hojo Tokimasa. However, a rift developed between Tokimasa and his sons Masako and Yoshitoki over how to handle this incident, and when Makikata discovered a plot to support Tomomasa as shogun in leap July of the same year, Tokimasa and Makikata were imprisoned in Izu by Masako and Yoshitoki, and Tomomasa was executed in Kyoto on the 26th of the same month.
