[Born] February 1, 1459, Wipfeld Died: February 4, 1508. German humanist and Latin poet from Vienna. His real name was Bickel (Pickel). In 1487, he was appointed the first German poet laureate by Emperor Frederick III in Nuremberg. He founded many literary societies modelled on those in Italy. All of his works were written in Latin, including lyric poems that frankly sang of the joys of his own life and love, as well as plays and festival dramas. One of his most well-known lyric poems is Quatuor libri amorum (1502), or Four Love Stories.
