Camellia Tsubakiyama

A Southern painter from the late Edo period. His given name was Hitsu, his pen name was Tokuho, and he was commonly known as Chuta. In addition to Chinzan, his pen names included Takukado and Kyuan. He was a police officer in the shogunate's spear unit, and excelled in martial arts as well as painting. He first studied painting under Kaneko Kinryo, and after Kinryo's death in 1817 (Bunka 14), he joined Watanabe Kazan, who was also a student of the same school. Kazan trusted Chinzan, and Chinzan repaid Kazan's trust by taking the lead in rescue efforts when Kazan was arrested in Bansha Prison (1839). He excelled in painting flowers and birds in the style of Unnanden and Zhang Qiu Gu, and also painted portraits following the example of Kazan, but his serious and gentle style is reminiscent of Chinzan's personality. His representative works include "Portrait of Takaku Aigai" and "Orchid and Bamboo Screen" (Okura Shukokan Museum of Art).

江戸後期の南画家。名は弼(ひつ)、字(あざな)は篤甫(とくほ)、通称は忠太。号は椿山のほかに琢華堂(たくかどう)、休庵(きゅうあん)など。幕府の槍組同心(やりぐみどうしん)で、画(え)とともに武術にも優れていた。画は初め金子金陵に学び、1817年（文化14）金陵が亡くなると同門の渡辺崋山(かざん)についた。崋山は椿山を信頼し、椿山もまた、蛮社(ばんしゃ)の獄(ごく)（1839）で崋山が逮捕されたときには、その救援活動の中心となって奔走するなど崋山の信頼にこたえた。画は惲南田(うんなんでん)や張秋谷(ちょうしゅうこく)風の花鳥画を得意とし、また崋山に倣って肖像画もよくしたが、まじめで穏やかなその作風は椿山の人柄をしのばせる。代表作に『高久靄厓(たかくあいがい)像』、『蘭竹図屏風(らんちくずびょうぶ)』（大倉集古館）がある。
