Archbishop of Reims (845-882). In French, Hincmar. He was a man of great influence, and rejected the Pope's or king's intervention in his diocese, and tried to make the archbishop's authority absolute, which he succeeded in doing. He was elected after the dismissal of his predecessor, Ebo (?-851), who had been a member of the Lothar faction, and therefore particularly hindered Ebo's attempt to restore it, revoked the ordinations of those who had been appointed bishops by Ebo, and dismissed his nephew, Bishop Hincmar of Laon, for disobedience to the archbishop (871). He was generally loyal to the West Frankish king, Charles II the Bald, but rejected all intervention by the king and controlled his court.

ランス大司教(845‐882)。フランス語ではHincmar。その性狷介で教皇や王の管区内への介入を排し，大司教の権威の絶対化に努め，かつ成功した。彼はロタール派の前任者エボEbo(？‐851)の罷免の後に選出されたため，とくにエボの復位の試みを妨げ，エボの叙任によって所属司教となった者の叙任を取り消し，彼の甥のラン司教ヒンクマールをも，大司教に対する不服従のゆえに罷免した(871)。西フランク王カール2世禿頭王には概して忠誠であったが，王のあらゆる介入を拒否し，しかもその宮廷を牛耳った。
