806 koro-882 Archbishop of Reims (845-882). In French, Hincmar. He was a man of great influence, and rejected the Pope's or king's intervention in his diocese, and tried to make the archbishop's authority absolute, which he succeeded in doing. He was elected after the dismissal of his predecessor, Ebo (?-851), who had been a member of the Lothar faction, and therefore particularly hindered Ebo's attempt to restore it, revoked the ordinations of those who had been appointed bishops by Ebo, and dismissed his nephew, Bishop Hincmar of Laon, for disobedience to the archbishop (871). He was generally loyal to the West Frankish king, Charles II the Bald, but rejected all intervention by the king and controlled his court.
