…American psychologist and philosopher. He is known as one of the founders of experimental psychology in the United States, and as a leading scholar who developed pragmatism into a broad ideological movement and made it one of the mainstream of modern philosophy. His father, Henry J. (1811-82), was a writer on religion and social issues, and his brother, who had the same name as his father, was a famous novelist. Born in New York City, he spent his childhood (1843-45) and boyhood (1855-60) in various parts of Europe. In 1860, he aspired to be a painter and studied under the American religious painter WM Hunt, but soon gave up on the idea after realizing that he had no talent. The following year, he entered the Lawrence School of Science at Harvard University, where he initially majored in chemistry, later studying anatomy and physiology, and then studying medicine. …
