He is known as one of the founders of experimental psychology in the United States, and as a leading scholar who developed pragmatism into a broad ideological movement and made it one of the mainstream of modern philosophy. His father, Henry J. (1811-82), was a writer on religion and social issues, and his brother, who had the same name as his father, was a famous novelist. Born in New York City, he spent his childhood (1843-45) and boyhood (1855-60) in various parts of Europe. In 1860, he aspired to be a painter and studied under the American religious painter WM Hunt, but soon gave up on the idea after realizing that he had no talent.
