Portuguese neurologist and politician. Graduated from the University of Coimbra. Professor of Neurology at the University of Lisbon from 1911 to 1945. Served as a member of parliament and Minister of Foreign Affairs, and was the chief delegate to the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. Developed cerebral arteriography. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1949 for his successful treatment of certain types of mental illness by frontal lobectomy.
