High-grade cloth

Japanese:
High-grade cloth

A thin, high-quality hemp fabric for kimono is called jofu. Nowadays, the name jofu is sometimes used for silk, cotton, and synthetic fabrics that are made to resemble hemp fabrics. The meaning of jofu does not mean high-quality cloth, but cloth used for tribute. In the Edo period, samurai's formal clothing was made of hemp fabric, and they were required to pay tribute to the shogunate due to transport taxes, so this name came to be used generally.

Well-known examples include Echigo Jofu woven in the Ojiya region of Niigata Prefecture, Noto Jofu from the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, Omi Jofu from Shiga Prefecture, and Satsuma Jofu from Kagoshima Prefecture. However, Satsuma Jofu is the name given when it was submitted by the feudal domain, and includes Miyako Jofu and Yaeyama Jofu. Originally bleached, it was made into plain-dyed, striped, and kasuri-patterned fabrics, and the materials used were a mix of hemp, silk, rayon, and cotton to create fabrics with a similar texture. Its thin, crisp feel is popular, and it is widely used as fabric for summer kimonos.
