In terms of directing, he used lighting to create realistic stage effects in war and fire scenes. He fought against the theater syndicate led by C. Frohman and others, and contributed to establishing freedom and independence in American theater. His most famous work is Madam Butterfly (1900), an adaptation of a novel by John Luther Long, which later became the basis for G. Puccini's opera.
