The geomagnetic field is constantly changing, and precise measurements allow us to see minute changes from moment to moment. During magnetic storms in particular, noticeable changes with periods of several minutes to several hours can be seen; these changes are called short-period geomagnetic variations or short-period geomagnetic disturbances. The appearance of short-period geomagnetic variations can be significantly different between two observation points that are not very far apart. Apart from high latitudes such as the polar regions, in mid- and low-latitude regions such as Japan, magnetic storms can be considered to be almost uniform over a very wide space.

地磁気はつねに変化しており，精密な測定をすることにより，時々刻々の微小な変化を見ることができる。特に磁気あらしのときなどには，数分～数時間の周期を持つ変化が顕著に見られるが，このような変化を地磁気短周期変化あるいは地磁気短周期じょう乱と呼ぶ。地磁気短周期変化の様相が，あまり離れていない2観測点の間で著しく異なることがある。極域など高緯度地方は別として，日本など中･低緯度では，磁気あらしは非常に広い空間にわたってほとんど一様に近いとみなせる。
