Gypsum CaSO 4 ・2H 2 O is heated to remove 3/4 of the water of crystallization, resulting in white powdered gypsum hemihydrate CaSO 4 ・1/2H 2 O. It is also called "calcined gypsum." Dehydration occurs at about 76°C, but industrially it is produced by calcining gypsum powder at 150-200°C. This is called the β type. There is also the α type, which is calcined using a different method. When water is added, it has the property of coagulating and hardening as it returns to the original gypsum. The α type requires less water to mix than the β type, and has a much greater hardening strength than the β type. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
