Japanese: 焼セッコウ(焼石膏) - しょうせっこう（英語表記）calcined gypsum

Gypsum CaSO ₄ ･2H ₂ O is heated to remove 3/4 of the water of crystallization, resulting in white powdered gypsum hemihydrate CaSO ₄ ･1/2H ₂ O. It is also called "calcined gypsum." Dehydration occurs at about 76°C, but industrially it is produced by calcining gypsum powder at 150-200°C. This is called the β type. There is also the α type, which is calcined using a different method. When water is added, it has the property of coagulating and hardening as it returns to the original gypsum. The α type requires less water to mix than the β type, and has a much greater hardening strength than the β type.

セッコウCaSO₄･2H₂Oを加熱して結晶水の3/4を脱水させ，白色粉末状の半水セッコウCaSO₄･1/2H₂Oとなったもの。〈焼きセッコウ〉ともいう。脱水は約76℃から起こるが，工業的にはセッコウ粉を150～200℃で煆焼（かしよう）して製造する。これをβ型という。さらに，煆焼方法の異なったα型がある。水を加えると，もとのセッコウに戻るときに凝結して固まる性質がある。α型はβ型に比べ練るときに水が少なくてすむもので，β型より硬化強度が非常に大きい。
