…In the Renaissance of the 15th and 16th centuries, music-loving kings such as Afonso V and João III came to prominence in Portugal, and religious polyphonic choral music, secular song, and early theatrical music developed. Major composers of the 16th century included the humanists Heliodor de Paiva (1502?-52) and António Carreira (c. 1525-c. 1589). The highly religious school continued to flourish in the southern city of Evora through the 17th century, producing such outstanding composers as Manuel Mendes (?-1605), Duarte Lobo (1565?-1646), Manuel Cardoso (1566-1650), and João Soares Rebelo (1610-61). …
