Subscriber Line Signaling

...between the telephone and the exchange, signals such as call origination signals and recovery signals that notify the hanging up and down of the handset, selection signals (dial pulses or multi-frequency codes for push-button phones) that send dial digits, and response and call signals that send dial tones and ringing bells are exchanged. These signals are called subscriber line signals. In contrast, signals exchanged between exchanges are called inter-office signals.
