Spira

…Once a Celtic settlement, and then occupied by the Nemetians since 70 B.C., the region was conquered by Caesar in 56 B.C. Noviomagus became the center of the Roman Civitas Nemetum. It was occupied by the Franks in 496, and was first named Spira in the 6th century. It was elevated to a bishopric by at least 614, and has been called a city ever since. Its advantageous location as a crossing point of the Rhine on the road from Strasbourg to Mainz made it an important commercial center. …
