...In the 1930s, as armed resistance was suppressed, the nationalist movement gained momentum. It was led by merchants from Fez and workers from Casablanca and Rabat, and initially the movement sought to improve the political status of Moroccans under colonial rule, but it soon came to aim for independence, and in 1944 the Istiqlāl (Independence) Party was formed.
