Istiqlāl (English spelling)

...In the 1930s, as armed resistance was suppressed, the nationalist movement gained momentum. It was led by merchants from Fez and workers from Casablanca and Rabat, and initially the movement sought to improve the political status of Moroccans under colonial rule, but it soon came to aim for independence, and in 1944 the Istiqlāl (Independence) Party was formed. The colonial authorities, who wanted to maintain the colonial system even after World War II, suppressed the nationalist movement, deposing Sultan Muhammad V in 1953 and sending him to exile, but this only strengthened the nationalist movement, and they were forced to recognize the restoration of Muhammad V (1955) and Moroccan independence.
