A village in Higashitagawa County, western Yamagata Prefecture. Population 6,309 (1995). Located at the southwestern edge of the Shonai region, south of Tsuruoka City, the town borders Asahi Village, Niigata Prefecture in the southwest. More than 90% of the town's area is mountainous, with the Asahi Mountains, including Yudono-san, one of the Dewa Sanzan mountains, to the east, Maya-san to the west, and Ito-dake to the south. The Bonji River, a tributary of the Aka River, flows north in the north, and the Arasawa Dam and Yakuwa Dam are on its tributaries. The town is one of the snowiest areas in the prefecture, and in recent years the population has declined dramatically, with many people migrating to work. In 1976 it was designated a depopulation promotion area. The eastern half of the town is included in Bandai-Asahi National Park, and is home to the Otoriike Campground and Yudono-san Ski Resort.Asahi [Asahi Village]Asahi [Asahi Village]Asahi [Asahi Village]Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
