A village in Higashi-Yatsushiro County in the southeastern part of Yamanashi Prefecture. Population 651 (1995). A mountain village surrounded by the Misaka Mountains, with the Ashi River flowing west through the center. Most of the village area is forest, with little arable land. The local specialty, konjac, has declined, but in recent years, cultivation of highland vegetables such as tomatoes and spinach has become popular. There is a large double-sided cypress (commonly known as Nanjamonja) tree at the watershed of Uguisu-shuku Pass, and a colony of lily of the valley at the foot of Mt. Kurodake. There is also a hiking trail from the Ashi River valley, where yamame trout live, to the Misaka Mountains, making it a tourist destination blessed with nature.
