Konrad Witz

Konrad Witz

German painter. Born in Rottweil, he lived in Basel from 1431 onwards, where he died. In 1434 he became a member of the local painters' guild. Although much about his biographical details is unclear, studies of his work have made him one of the greatest German painters of the 15th century. It is believed that he first studied Flemish painting, probably under the Van Eyck brothers and the Flemalle painters. He showed outstanding skill in the realistic depiction of the texture of his subjects, and was unrivalled in the German painting of his time in capturing figures in three-dimensional space, as in his Annunciation to the Virgin Mary (States Museum Naumburg). The wonderful figurative quality of the characters in his religious paintings overcomes the Gothic style without losing sight of the ideal of the subject. This characteristic is fully displayed in his masterpiece Peter the Fish-catcher (1444, Geneva Museum), where even the refraction of light in water is depicted realistically. In this work, the landscape background is beautifully depicted, suggesting the imminent emergence of a new genre, landscape painting. He is remembered as the painter who heralded the arrival of a new century in German painting.
