Kyodo News - Kyodo News

Japan's leading news agency. It was founded on November 1, 1945 (Showa 20) as a union organization of newspapers, following the dissolution of Domei Tsushinsha, which was active during World War II, in October of the same year. It is the world's largest news agency distributing news to the press. It is an incorporated association with its headquarters in Tokyo, with five branches, 48 general and local bureaus throughout Japan, and general bureaus in 39 major cities overseas, where its journalists are constantly covering news. In addition to its own reporting on overseas news, it has mutual communication agreements with major news agencies around the world, such as AP and UPI (both in the United States), Reuters (Britain), Itar-Tass (Russia), and Xinhua (China). The domestic and international news and news photos it collects are distributed to member newspapers nationwide (the three major national newspapers, Asahi, Mainichi, and Yomiuri, are not currently members, but only receive foreign news), NHK, private broadcasting companies, and government agencies. For distribution, it utilizes the latest communication facilities, such as data transmission, facsimile, photo transmission, wired and wireless, ultra-high frequency radio, and dedicated telephones. Kyodo News has a huge influence over major local newspapers, and many prefectural newspapers that compete with national newspapers rely heavily on Kyodo News for their front page news in order to provide their local readers with sufficient national news. Kyodo News also distributes sample articles for each newspaper's editorials and ranks the articles it distributes by importance, performing activities that go beyond the scope of activities of ordinary news agencies. Kyodo News also provides a variety of other services, including a telegraph and broadcasting service for Japanese ships at sea, an English language broadcasting service for overseas users, and a special telegraph service for contracted companies.
