...a machine that automatically selects, casts, and sets type. There are Japanese typesetting machines and Roman typesetting machines, which are further divided into Monotype, in which each character is cast individually, and Linotype, in which a line is cast as a whole. Because letterpress printing relies on the manual work of hand-picking (selecting) and setting (composing), there was a demand for a machine that could set the type as it was being cast.
