An annual plant of the Chenopodiaceae family (APG classification: Amaranthaceae). The medicinal plant Keigai is also called Aritasou, but this is a different annual plant of the Lamiaceae family. It is a naturalized species native to South America and has a strong smell. The stem is 60-80 cm tall, well branched, grows diagonally upwards, and is hairless. The leaves are alternate, oblong-lanceolate with a pointed tip, wedge-shaped at the base, short stalks, and irregular teeth on the edges. The leaves at the top of the stem are small and linear. From July to October, the axils bear small green panicles, and the inflorescences also contain leaf-like bracts. There are 3-5 perianth pieces. The caryocarp contains one shiny, convex, lens-shaped seed. The Japanese name is said to come from the fact that it was cultivated in Arita, Saga Prefecture. Those with hairy plants are sometimes distinguished as D. anthelmintica (L.) Mosyakin et Clemants ( A. anthelmintica (L.) Spach), native to North America, have leaves with slightly deep notched teeth, and the inflorescences are long and slender, not intermingled with leaf-like bracts, but rather gather together to form a large cone. The entire plant contains an essential oil called henopodium oil, and it is cultivated as an anthelminth and has also become naturalized.
