From 1477 to 1488, he served as the abbot of the Dominican Order in Cologne, but from 1481 onwards he became the inquisitor for witch trials, and compiled the records of the trials into the book Malleus Maleficarum (1487), co-authored with Heinrich Krämer (c. 1430-1505, also known as H. Institoris).
