A Mongol state that ruled Central Asia in the 13th and 14th centuries. One of the "Four Mongol Khanates." In the early 13th century, Chagatai Khan, the second son of Genghis Khan, was given 4,000 (or 8,000) Mongols by his father, and founded the Chagatai Ulus, based first in the Altai Mountains and then in the Tianshan Mountains. After Chagatai's death, his descendants inherited the position of Khan, but they were constantly embroiled in power struggles for the position of Great Khan in the center of the Mongol Empire, and were far from being an independent state.
