1582-1645 (Tensho 10-Shoho 2) A skilled calligrapher in the early Edo period. Commonly known as Chozaemon, his given name was Shigeyasu. He was initially Toyotomi Hideyori's right-hand man. In 1617 (Genwa 3), he was summoned by Tokugawa Hidetada because of his calligraphy skills, and became the shogunate's right-hand man, receiving a stipend of 500 koku. In 1603 (Kan'ei 10), he resigned from his position due to illness, but continued to serve Iemitsu closely, shaving his head at his command and taking the name Ryukei. The following year, he was appointed a Hoin and given the title of Shikibukyo. His style of calligraphy was passed on to his eldest son, Chozaemon Shigemasa, who perfected it as the Ohashi school, and it was widely used throughout the early modern period.
