Vanga shrike

A general term for birds belonging to the Vangidae family of the Passeriformes class of birds. There are 13 known species in the Vangidae family. All of them are endemic to the island of Madagascar, and are sometimes called the Madagascar Shrikes. They have large, hooked beaks and strong legs. Madagascar is thought to have separated from the African continent before the Triassic period, so the Vangidae is thought to have evolved from a species similar to the African bush shrikes. They are forest birds that live in groups near the treetops and feed on insects and small animals. The species commonly known as the Vangidae or Madagascar Shrike is Euryceros prevostii , a bird with a large, lead-colored beak, black head, brown body, and a total length of about 28 centimeters.

鳥綱スズメ目オオハシモズ科に属する鳥の総称。同科Vangidaeには13種が知られている。いずれもマダガスカル島にのみ産する特産種で、マダガスカルモズ科とよばれることもある。嘴(くちばし)は大きく先は鉤(かぎ)形になっていて、足も強い。マダガスカル島は三畳紀以前にアフリカ大陸から分離したと思われるので、オオハシモズもアフリカ産のヤブモズ類あたりと近いものから種が分化してきたと考えられている。森林にすむ鳥で、多くは木のこずえ近くに群れで生活し、昆虫類や小動物を食べている。一般にオオハシモズあるいはマダガスカルモズとよばれている種はEuryceros prevostiiで、鉛色の大きな嘴、黒色の頭、褐色の体をし、全長28センチメートルほどの鳥である。
