The realism of portrait sculpture in the late Republican period is said to have originated from Etruscan sculpture and the Roman imagines majorum (figures of ancestors), but it was also strongly influenced by the realism of Hellenistic art, as is evident in the statue of Brutus and the Barberini in a Toga.
