Okinawa People's Party

Japanese: 沖縄人民党 - おきなわじんみんとう

A political party in Okinawa. Founded in July 1947 in Okinawa (→Okinawa Prefecture), which was under the rule of the United States after World War II. It was founded with the goal of realizing democracy in Okinawa in line with the spirit of the Potsdam Declaration. It strongly opposed American rule and American military bases, and adopted slogans such as the repeal of Article 3 of the Treaty of Peace with Japan and the realization of the immediate, unconditional, and complete return of Okinawa to Japan (→Reversion of Okinawa). In 1956, secretary Nagase Kamejiro was elected mayor of Naha, but was dismissed by the American authorities within a year. In November 1970, Senaga was elected to the House of Representatives in the national election (→General Election of House of Representatives). After Okinawa's return to Japan in October 1973, it decided to organizationally merge with the Japanese Communist Party and was established as the Okinawa Prefectural Committee of the Japanese Communist Party.

沖縄の政党。第2次世界大戦後にアメリカ合衆国の統治下に置かれた沖縄（→沖縄県）で，1947年7月に結党。ポツダム宣言の趣旨にそって，沖縄に民主主義を実現することを目標に掲げて結成された。アメリカによる統治とアメリカ軍基地に強く反対し，対日講和条約第3条の撤廃と日本への即時無条件全面復帰の実現などをスローガンに掲げた（→沖縄返還）。1956年書記長瀬長亀次郎を那覇市長に当選させたが，アメリカ当局によって 1年足らずで解職された。1970年11月の国政参加選挙で瀬長が衆議院議員に当選（→衆議院議員総選挙）。沖縄の日本復帰後の 1973年10月，日本共産党に組織的合流を決定し，日本共産党沖縄県委員会として発足した。
