Fontane - Theodor Fontane

Fontane - Theodor Fontane

A representative novelist of German civil realism. Born in Neurpin, near the Prussian capital Berlin, to a family of French Protestant exiles (Huguenots). Following in his father's footsteps as a pharmacist, he aspired to become a writer early on, and after achieving considerable success as a poet and journalist, including "Narrative Poems" (1861) and "Mark-Brandenburg: A Journey Through the City of Brandenburg" in four volumes (1862-1882), he emerged as a novelist at the advanced age of 59 with the full-length historical novel "Before the Storm" (1878). The 16 short and long novels published since then mostly capture the society and people of the author's own time, the late 19th century, and his works set in Berlin and its surrounding areas are particularly outstanding. These include the relatively short The Unfaithful Woman (1882), Cecile (1887), The Error (1888), and Stiene (1890), as well as the lengthy Frau Jenny Treibel (1892), Effi Briest (1895), and Lake Stechlin (1898).While often dealing with the inequality and breakdown of relations between men and women, his works are characterized by the way they expose the multilayered contradictions inherent in the reality of Prussia and Germany through witty conversations between a diverse cast of characters, including aristocrats (Junkers), merchants and industrialists, commoners, and intellectuals, and his style is notable for building a bridge to contemporary literature.
