Temporomandibular joint

Temporomandibular joint
This joint is formed by the condyle of the mandible and the condyle fossa on the underside of the temporal bone. There is an articular disk between the two and a joint capsule around it. The movement of this joint allows the mandible to move and open and close the mouth, i.e., to chew and speak, so it is the joint that is most overused in the human body. If the function of this joint is impaired by fractures or dislocations due to trauma, or by various causes such as temporomandibular joint inflammation, temporomandibular joint disorder, or ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint, it can cause malocclusion.
