Transportation refers to moving the location of goods within a factory, and transportation management refers to systematic measures to efficiently carry out transportation. The basis of transportation management is to move the necessary goods, in the necessary amount, at the necessary time, to the necessary place quickly and safely. Since transportation itself is a cost factor that does not contribute to added value, it is desirable to reduce the amount of transportation as much as possible. However, focusing only on reducing the amount of transportation can lead to an increase in inventory and a decrease in work efficiency, so consideration must be given to the overall balance. Specific contents of transportation management include: (1) streamlining routes and optimizing the placement of machines, equipment, and warehouses to shorten transportation distances; (2) adopting appropriate machines and tools to improve transportation capacity; (3) taking energy-saving measures such as using gravity to reduce transportation costs; and (4) making the most of transportation capacity by planning transportation work.

工場の中で物財の位置を移動することを運搬といい、運搬を効率的に遂行するための体系的施策を運搬管理という。運搬管理の基本は、必要な物財を、必要な量だけ、必要な時刻に、必要な場所へ敏速かつ安全に移動することである。運搬それ自体は付加価値に貢献しない費用の要因であるから、この点からすれば、運搬量をなるべく削減することが望ましい。しかし、運搬量の削減のみにとらわれると、在庫の増大や作業能率の低下を招くことがあるから、全体のバランスに対する配慮が必要となる。運搬管理の具体的な内容としては、(1)運搬距離の短縮のため、経路を合理化し、機械、設備、倉庫の配置を適正化する。(2)運搬能力向上のため、適切な機械や用具を採用する。(3)運搬費用を低下させるため、重力利用のような省エネルギー対策をとる。(4)運搬作業の計画化により運搬能力の最大限活用を図る、などがあげられる。
