A protochordate of the Ascidians of the family Oncorhynchidae in the order Urochordate. It is found from central Honshu to the Philippines, attaching to rocks below the low tide line. It forms bun-shaped colonies about 12 cm long and 5 cm high, and attaches to objects at almost the center of the bottom. It is covered with a translucent, pale pink outer skin, and the many orange individual zoons lined up give it a reddish-red appearance. Each individual zoon is about 2 cm long, with its posterior abdomen buried vertically in the outer skin, and 15 to 30 zoons form a long, slender line. Each line has one to three common excretory openings. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
