Otomo no Matori - Otomo no Matori

Japanese: 大友真鳥 - おおとものまとり

The title of an old Joruri piece. The original versions published in 1662 (Kanbun 2) by Kazusa Shojo Fujiwara Masanobu and 1663 by Dewa no Jo Fujiwara Nobukatsu still remain. Both are in 5-dan format. There are also original Gidayu versions and a later Edo version. There are differences, but the gist is that Takamura Masamichi and Kanemichi, father and son, try to defeat the rebellion of Kyushu Tandai Otomo Shintori, and in the end, realizing his fate, Shintori gives his head to Kanemichi. The exchange between the bold Kanemichi and Shintori, who is portrayed as a great man despite being a rebel, is refreshing. Takeda Izumo's "Odairi Otomo Shintori" is an adaptation of this piece. 古浄瑠璃の曲名。1662年(寛文2)刊の上総少掾藤原正信と63年刊の出羽掾藤原信勝の正本が現存。ともに五段。義太夫正本や後期の江戸板もある。相違点もあるが，大筋は九州探題大友真鳥の謀反を高村正道･兼道父子が打倒せんとするもので，最後には己の運命を悟った真鳥が自分の首を兼道に与える。豪胆な兼道と謀反人ながら大人物として描かれた真鳥との応対が爽快。竹田出雲作《大内裏大友真鳥》は本曲の改作。【山本吉左右】
