A bird of the woodpecker family (illustration). Total length is about 46 cm. A large woodpecker with an all-black body. Its eyes and beak are pale yellow, and the top of the head of the male and the back of the head of the female are bright red. It lives in primeval forests of deciduous broadleaf trees and a mixture of coniferous and broadleaf trees, and sings in a sharp voice, "kyo, kyo, kyo." It flies with slow, wavy wings, and sings "kyo, kyo" even while in flight. It skillfully climbs tree trunks, makes holes in the bark with its beak, and eats by pulling out large insect larvae with its tongue.

キツツキ目キツツキ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約46cm。全身黒色の大型のキツツキ。眼とくちばしが淡黄色で，雄は頭頂全部，雌は後頭だけが鮮紅色をしている。落葉広葉樹や針葉樹と広葉樹の混じった原生林にすみ，キョー，キョー，キョーと鋭い声で鳴く。ゆっくりしたはばたきで，深い波形を描きながら飛び，飛翔（ひしよう）中にもキョッ，キョッと鳴く。樹幹を巧みによじのぼり，樹皮にくちばしで穴を開け，大型の昆虫類の幼虫などを舌でひき出して食べる。
