Katyn - Katyn

...An incident in which a large number of Polish officers captured by the Soviet army were massacred in the early stages of World War II. Katyn is a forest on the banks of the Dnieper River near Smolensk in western Russia. In April 1943, German troops who invaded the Soviet Union announced that they had found the bodies of 4,321 murdered Polish officers in Katyn Forest, which led to a breakdown in relations between the Soviet Union and the Polish government in exile, which had been growing increasingly tense over territorial issues.
