…refers to a group of painters active in the area along the Danube River from Regensburg and Passau in Bavaria in southern Germany to Vienna in the first half of the 16th century. The main artists were Altdorfer, Wolf Huber (1485-1553), Rueland Frueauf the Younger, and early L. Cranach, as well as printmakers such as Augustin Hirschvogel and Hans Sebald Lautensack. They did not form a school, and had few personal connections, but they shared a common goal of awakening a sense of landscape to the beautiful natural scenery along the Danube River. …
