An evergreen tall tree of the Ebenaceae family that grows in the lowland forests of Okinawa. It is also called Yaeyama Kokutan. It grows thick with many small branches and can reach a height of about 10 m. The leaves are obovate, leathery and thick, 3-5 cm long and 1.5-2.5 cm wide, with no sawtooth edges. In June, several pale yellow flowers appear next to the leaves on new branches. There are male and female flowers, and the corolla is bell-shaped with three deep lobes. The flowers are trimeric, which differs from most other species of the Diospyros genus, which are tetrameric. The fruits are elliptical, yellowish red when ripe, and 8-12 mm long. They grow wild on Okinawa Island and the Yaeyama Islands, and are widely distributed in southern China, Indochina, India, and Sri Lanka.
