...The river originates from Lake Abiskojokk on the Norwegian border, flows through northern Sweden, and empties into the innermost part of the Gulf of Bothnia. It is 570 km long. It is also called the Torne River, or Tornionjoki in Finnish. In the middle part of the river it joins with the Muonio River, which flows along the Finnish border, and in the lower part the Torne River forms the border. The upper reaches are plateaus and reindeer pastures of the Sámi (Lapps), the middle reaches are coniferous forests, and the lower reaches are mostly marshes. The towns of Torne on the Finnish side of the river mouth and Haparanda on the Swedish side are the centers of forestry and distribution of goods. ...
