A province in the northwest of Pakistan. Its area is 74,521 km2 and its population is 11.66 million (1983). Its capital is Peshawar. It consists of mountainous areas bordering the northeastern border of Afghanistan, roughly west of the Indus River, and a plateau at the foot of the mountains. The Kabul River runs east to west through the centre, forming a fertile river valley plain (Peshawar Valley). Except for the northern mountainous area, the majority of the inhabitants are Iranian Pashtun (Pahtung) people, who form a semi-independent tribal area along the border in the southwest of the province. The climate is semi-arid, and the main crops are wheat, corn, rice, sugarcane and tobacco, with the latter three mainly produced in the Peshawar Valley, where irrigation is well developed.
