House-rent party

...In Chicago, black neighborhoods were clearly defined, and the population doubled in five years, causing rents to soar. When income alone could no longer cover the rent, blacks organized "house-rent parties" as a mutual aid movement, and made profits from admission fees and food and drink to use to pay the rent. Pianos were used at these parties, giving birth to the percussive blues piano style known as boogie woogie.
