Nitti, Francesco Saverio
Born: July 19, 1868, Melfi
[Died] February 20, 1953. Rome Italian economist and politician. Professor of finance at the University of Naples from 1898 to 1923, he wrote many books about the Southern Problem. He became a member of parliament in 2004, and after serving as various ministers, he became prime minister in 1919-20. Positioned on the liberal left, he worked to restore the economy during the difficult period after World War I, and in the face of the illegality issue of G. D'Annunzio, who led a volunteer corps in Fiume and ruled for over a year, he introduced an electoral system based on proportional representation and worked to democratize politics. However, he was unable to gain the support of socialist forces and Catholics, so he resigned. Opposing the fascist regime, he went into exile, and after World War II, he returned to Italy and became a senator.
