Abbreviation: SCM. The general term refers to Christian evangelism, research, and service activities for university students. The specific term refers to the student divisions of the YMCA and YWCA in the UK and the US, which were founded in the 19th century, the so-called Student Y movement. The Student Y summer school, held in 1886 in Mount Hermon, Massachusetts, under the direction of popular evangelist Moody, was the starting point of the Student Volunteer Movement, which encouraged university students to volunteer as missionaries, and the Student Christian Movement was born from this overseas missionary movement by university students.

略称SCM。一般的名称としては大学生を対象としたキリスト教の伝道，研究，奉仕活動をさす。個別的名称としては19世紀に創立されたイギリスおよびアメリカのYMCAとYWCAの学生部，いわゆる学Yの運動をさす。1886年マサチューセッツ州マウント･ハーモンで大衆伝道者ムーディの指導のもとに開かれた学Yの夏期学校は大学生を宣教師として志願させるスチューデント･ボランティア運動の出発点となったが，この大学生による海外宣教運動からうまれたのが学生キリスト教運動である。
