Otomo Chronicle

Japanese: 大友記 - おおともき

This book focuses on the era of the feudal lords Otomo Sorin and Yoshimune, who were based in Bungo, and includes the genealogy of the Otomo clan, the theory that Yoshinao, the founder of the Otomo clan, was an illegitimate son of Minamoto no Yoritomo, and the theory that Chikayo was appointed as the Kyushu Tandai. It has little historical value. Regarding the author and the time of its creation, the Jiranki, which is said to be the basis for the Takahashiki, is actually another name for the Otomoki, and there is a theory that the author was the monk Sonshin Osho and that it was created in the early modern period based on the colophon of the Takahashiki, but there are few similarities between the two books, making this theory difficult to support. Judging from the writing and content, it was probably written by someone related to the Yanagawa domain in the mid-modern period.

豊後を本拠とした大名大友宗麟，義統（よしむね）の時代を中心に，大友氏の系図，大友氏の始祖能直の源頼朝落胤説，親世の九州探題就任説などを記した書。史料的価値は少ない。著者と成立時期については〈高橋記〉のもとになったと伝える〈治乱記〉は実は〈大友記〉の別名で，〈高橋記〉の奥書から著者存心和尚，成立は近世初期とする説があるが，同書との共通点は少なくこの説は成立しがたい。文章･内容からみて，近世中期に柳河藩関係者の手になったものであろう。
