Kipp apparatus

Kipp apparatus

It is also called Kipp's gas generator. It is a device invented by Petrus Jacobus Kipp (1808-1864), a Dutch chemist and physicochemical instrument maker, and is used to continuously generate gas by reacting a liquid reagent with a solid lump. It is suitable for obtaining small amounts of gas as needed in laboratories. As shown in the figure , it is a glass apparatus consisting of a large funnel A and a narrowed container. Solid reagent is placed in the bulb B without dropping to the bottom C, and funnel A is attached. When liquid reagent is poured from A, it reaches B via C and the gas generating reaction begins. Tap D is opened to extract the required amount of gas. When D is closed, the pressure of the generated gas pushes down the liquid level, and the gas generating reaction stops. Tap E is the waste liquid outlet. It is used to generate hydrogen sulfide from iron sulfide and sulfuric acid, hydrogen from zinc and hydrochloric acid, carbon dioxide from marble and hydrochloric acid, and oxygen from manganese dioxide and hydrogen peroxide.
