...This is the original form of the motet. A counterpoint melody with lyrics is called a motetus (Latin), the origin of which is said to be the Old French word mot, meaning "words." Around 1240, the name motetus came to be used to refer to the music itself, and the number of additional voices increased to two, and occasionally to three.
