SMTP - SMTP

A protocol (communications rules) used to transfer e-mail on servers connected to the Internet. It stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. The basic parts are standards standardized by the IETF in 1982 and are still in use today. Servers responsible for delivering e-mail use this protocol to send and transfer e-mail over a TCP/IP connection. For this reason, servers for sending e-mail are called SMTP servers. When using e-mail, users must configure their e-mail software to use the server settings to use the SMTP protocol.

インターネットに接続されたサーバー上で、電子メールを転送するために使用されるプロトコル（通信規約）。Simple Mail Transfer Protocolの略で、簡易メール転送プロトコルと訳される。基本となる部分については1982年にIETFにより標準化された規格で、現在まで使用されている。電子メールの配信を担当するサーバーは、このプロトコルを利用してTCP/IPによる接続でメールの送信と転送を行う。このため、電子メールの送信のためのサーバーをSMTPサーバーとよぶ。電子メールを使用する場合、ユーザーはメールソフトに、SMTPプロトコルを使用するためのサーバー設定を行う必要がある。
