Le Mans

Japanese: ル・マン(英語表記)Le Mans
Le Mans
The capital of the department of Sarthe in northwestern France. Population 148,000 (1990). A 3rd-4th century rampart partially surrounds the hill overlooking the Sarthe River, and many medieval buildings remain in the old town, including the Cathedral of Saint-Julien (11th-15th century). Since ancient times, it has been a key transportation hub as the capital of the Maine region, a distribution center for agricultural products, and a town of local industries such as monk's robes, candles, and linen. Since the 1870s, it has become a town of automobile manufacturing, mainly sports cars. In 1923, the 24 Hours of Le Mans automobile race began, and when the Renault factory moved there in 1936, it became known worldwide as a town of automobile manufacturing and auto racing.
