However, the leader of the Protestants, Henry I de Guise, disliked the growing influence of the Protestant leader, Admiral Coligny, on national politics, and attempted to assassinate him, but failed (August 22). Fearing a full-scale counterattack by the Huguenots, he resorted to mass murder. It is clear that the Queen Mother, Catherine de Medici, was involved in this plan, but it is believed that King Charles IX was forced to agree to it at the last minute. …
